Gateway Secondary School exists for one clear purpose — to take capable, curious young people from JSS1 and send them out at SS3 as confident, well-prepared graduates who are ready for university, polytechnic, vocational training, or whatever path they choose.

We are proud of our WAEC and NECO results, but we are even prouder of what those results represent. Behind every grade is a student who was pushed, supported, encouraged, and sometimes pushed again by teachers who believed in them even when they did not yet believe in themselves.

Our secondary school is disciplined — we make no apology for that. But discipline here does not mean rigid or joyless. Our students have a rich school life: debate competitions, inter-house sports, cultural events, leadership roles, and the kind of friendships that last decades. They are busy, productive, and — most importantly — they are growing.

Two Phases, One Journey

Junior & Senior Secondary School

Our secondary school is split into two clear phases, each with its own academic focus and progression goals.

Phase One

Junior Secondary School

JSS1 · JSS2 · JSS3  ·  Ages 11–14

JSS is where the secondary journey begins. Students cover a broad compulsory curriculum — no specialisation yet — so they can discover their strengths across all subjects before choosing a stream in SS1. The Junior WAEC (BECE) is sat at the end of JSS3.

Phase Two

Senior Secondary School

SS1 · SS2 · SS3  ·  Ages 14–18

In SS1, students choose their specialisation stream — Science, Arts, or Commercial — based on their aptitude, interests, and career goals. Specialist subject teachers take over for deeper, exam-focused teaching. SS3 is the final push toward WAEC and NECO, with intensive revision and mock examinations throughout the year.

Structure & Routine

A Typical Day in Secondary School

Our secondary students follow a full, structured school day that balances academic work, rest, and extracurricular activities.

7:30 – 7:55am

Assembly & Devotion

Morning devotion, announcements, and daily briefing by the principal.
8:00 – 10:00am

Periods 1–4 (Morning Lessons)

Four 30-minute class periods. Core and stream subjects.
10:00 – 10:25am

Break Time

Students eat, rest, and socialise under teacher supervision.
10:25am – 12:30pm

Periods 5–8 (Late Morning)

Continues with specialist and elective subjects.

12:30 – 1:15pm

Lunch Break

Students eat lunch. Supervised by duty teachers.
1:15 – 2:45pm

Periods 9–11 (Afternoon Lessons)

Practical sessions, computer lab, PE, or remaining subjects.

Prep / Assignment Period

Structured independent study, homework review, and class assignments.
3:15pm

Dismissal

Club meetings and extracurricular activities held on selected days after dismissal.
Environment & Standards

Discipline, Culture & Character

A disciplined school is a safe school. At Gateway Secondary, high standards are the norm — and our students rise to them.

Uniform & Appearance

All students wear the Gateway school uniform. Appearance standards are clear and enforced — because how students carry themselves matters, inside and outside the classroom.

Phone-Free Learning

Mobile phones are not permitted during school hours. Students are here to learn. This policy keeps classrooms focused and has been widely supported by parents.

Respect as a Standard

Gateway students are expected to respect teachers, classmates, and school property — always. Bullying of any kind is not tolerated and dealt with decisively.

Prefect System

Student leadership is built into the school culture. Prefects are selected based on character and academic standing — giving SS students real leadership responsibilities.

Inter-House Sports

Our inter-house sports competition is one of the most anticipated events of the year — building team spirit, healthy competition, and school pride across all classes.

Debate & Leadership Clubs

Debate, press club, and student leadership forums give secondary students a voice and a platform — developing skills that go far beyond the subjects on the WAEC timetable.
